RIVIERA
MAYA
A WORLD OF SPLENDID NATURE
Towards
the south, leaving behind the luxurious hotels and shopping
centers, another world opens up. The Riviera Maya is located
in the middle of the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula
in the state of Quintana Roo. It begins 20 miles south of
the Cancun international airport and ends at a quaint fishing
village called Punta Allen, located on a small peninsula
within a large Biosphere Reserve. Between these two points,
there are many towns different in style and size, each with
its own unique character, as well as a variety of beautiful
bays and solitary beaches. The largest towns are Playa del
Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal and Tulum. Here towns are
smaller and there are few tourists with miles of solitary
virgin beaches, sparkling white sand and crystalline turquoise
waters.
The
options for accommodations, activities and dining are incredibly
diverse within this paradise. You will find five-star hotels,
impeccable service and exquisite cuisine to sleeping in
a hammock in the moonlight with only the stars for company
and a daily diet of fresh seafood. Golf courses, yachts
and deep sea fishing are easy to find, as well as, scuba
diving the reef, tours to archeological sites and jungle
treks.
Ecology
is a major concern among the people who live here. There
are beach clean ups and ecological educational campaigns
every month. This attempt to conserve and respect the natural
surroundings has helped maintain the incredible beauty of
the area, attracting visitors who share this consciousness.
It’s beauty will be preserved for years to come.
The
second largest reef system in the world, the Great Maya
Reef, runs along the coastline and an unrestrained jungle
surrounds the towns and beaches. In this part of the Mexican
Caribbean, full of exotic tropical animals, peering or flying
through the branches, there are many places to explore.
A unique complex underground river system flows beneath
the surface and surprises visitors with magical caverns,
caves and cenotes (sinkholes). There are hundreds of archeological
sites, remnants of the incredible and timeless Mayan civilization,
and a spectacular and plentiful marine life. |
